Gateway to Cantonese is written for people from other places who are learning Cantonese, giving a systematic introduction to the Cantonese language and its vocabulary and grammar. The book is divided into three parts. The first part, or the language part, introduces the sounds, rhythms and tones in Cantonese by comparison to Chinese putonghua, helping the learners master the pronunciation of the Cantonese sounds, rhythms and tones so as to lay a foundation for the learning of the dialect words and expressions. The second part is vocabulary, focusing on the commonly used words in Cantonese and the dialect words which show a major difference from putonghua. The third part is grammar, dealing with the word-building in Cantonese, the Cantonese sentence patterns different from putonghua and the usage of function words in Cantonese.
