Pre-University Education Standards for Foreigners Studying in China (Trial
Version) (hereinafter referred to as “the Standards”)
is the reference basis for learning, teaching, testing and evaluation of pre-university
education for foreigners studying in China, as well as for the testing and evaluation
of their undergraduate admission.
The Standards specifies the levels of basic Chinese language,
professional Chinese language and professional knowledge to be achieved at the
end of the pre-university education for foreigners
studying in China. It is described in levels (Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3)
from the three modules of Basic Chinese, Professional Chinese (Chinese for
Arts, Chinese for Economy and Trade, Chinese for Science and Technology, Chinese
for Medicine) and Professional Knowledge (Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry).
The Basic Chinese specifies the Chinese language proficiency
requirements for the three levels in terms of the five language skills of
listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, with verbal
communication skills, topic-based task content, and quantitative linguistic
indicators as the three evaluation dimensions. The syllabus, handwritten
Chinese character list, vocabulary list and grammar grading outline are also attached.
The Professional Chinese specifies the Chinese language and learning
competence requirements for the three levels in terms of the four language
skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with professional learning
competence, topic-based task content and quantitative linguistic indicators as
the three evaluation dimensions. The glossary of vocabulary and common
expressions for each level are also attached.
The
Professional Knowledge describes the competency standards for each level in
five dimensions, including identification, comprehension, reasoning, analysis
and synthesis, and application of professional knowledge, and provides detailed
teaching content and learning objectives for each level. The glossary of
vocabulary for each level is also attached.
China Scholarship Council (CSC), an institution
directly under the Ministry of Education (MOE), was established in 1996, with
the main responsibilities of organizing and implementing the selection,
admission, financial help and management
of state-funded students, rewarding outstanding self-funded students, accepting
donations from friendly people, institutions and organizations both inside and
outside China, and cooperating with relevant institutions to set up
study-abroad programmes.
The Standards serves as a reference
basis for the testing and assessment of foreigners’ pre-university education in
China.
